An Act relative to reprecincting.
Be it
enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
SECTION 1. Section 1 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line one, the words “nineteen hundred and ninety-two” and inserting in place thereof the words:- two thousand and one.
SECTION 2. Section 1 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striki ng out, in line eight, the words “Not later than July first in such year” and inserting in place thereof the words:- Within seven days of the last day the city council may vote,.
SECTION 3. Section 1 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 27, the words “September first immediately following” and inserting in place thereof the words:- thirty five days after the final day to give written notice to the state secretary.
SECTION 4. Section 1 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 28, the word “fifteen” and inserting in place thereof the word:- seven.
SECTION 5. Section 1 of chapter 54 of the Gene ral Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 32, the word “twenty” and inserting in place thereof the word:- seven.
SECTION 6. Section 1 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Offici al Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 34, the words “October fifteenth immediately following” and inserting in place thereof the words:- fourteen days after the last day to receive notice from the local election district review commission.
SECTION 7. Section 1 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 39, the words “October fifteenth” and inserting in place thereof the words:- the forty-ninth day following the final day to give notice to the state secretary.
SECTION 8. Section 1 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 40, the word “thirty” and inserting in place thereof the words: - fifteen.
SECTION 9. Section 1 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by inserting, after line 44, the following new paragraph:- Should the state secretary determine that federal census figures ar e available at such time as to allow this process to begin earlier, the state secretary will designate the date on which such process shall begin. Such date shall replace “June fifteenth” in line 23 of this section.
SECTION 10. Section 2 of chapter 54 o f the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 14, the words “next following” and inserting in place thereof:- following the making thereof.
SECTION 11. Section 6 of chapter 54 of the General Law s, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 22, the words “nineteen hundred and ninety-two” and inserting in place thereof the words:- two thousand and one.
SECTION 12. Section 6 of chapter 54 of the General L aws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 49, the words “July first of the year in which such division is authorized or required to be made” and inserting in place thereof the words:- seven days after the da te on which the board of selectmen is authorized or required to divide the town into precincts.
SECTION 13. Section 6 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 60, the words “ September first of said year” and inserting in place thereof the words:- thirty five days following the date the town clerk must transmit to the state secretary a copy of the division.
SECTION 14. Section 6 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 63, the words “September twentieth of said year” and inserting in place thereof the words:- the forty-ninth day following the date the town clerk must transmit to the state secretary a copy of such division.
SECTION 15. Section 6 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 69, the words “October fifteenth” and inserting in place thereof the words:- sixty-f our days following the date the town clerk must transmit to the state secretary a copy of such division.
SECTION 16. Section 6 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 74, th e words “September twentieth” and inserting in place thereof the words:- the forty-ninth day following the date the town clerk must transmit to the state secretary a copy of such division.
SECTION 17. Section 6 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appea ring in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out, in line 75, the word “thirty” and inserting in place thereof the word:- fifteen.
SECTION 18. Section 6 of chapter 54 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 1996 Official Edition, is hereby amended by inserting, after line 79, the following new paragraph:- Should the state secretary determine that federal census figures are available at such time as to allow this process to begin earlier, the state secretary will designate the date on which such process shall begin.
