Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives
in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same,
as follows:
SECTION 1. Section 1 of chapter 115 of the General Laws is hereby amended by striking out the definition of "Veterans' agent", as appearing in section 35 of chapter 627 of the acts of 1954, and inserting in place thereof the following definition:-
"Veterans' agent" or "Part-time veterans' agent", a veteran, as defined in clause Forty-third of section seven of chapter four, appointed under section three to disburse veterans' benefits in any city or town, or, if no such appointment has been made, the mayor of the city or the selectmen of the town disbursing such benefits; in Boston, the veterans' benefits and services commissioner.
SECTION 2. Section 7 of said chapter 115 is hereby amended by striking out the first sentence, as most recently amended by section 13 of chapter 260 of the acts of 1974, and inserting in place thereof the following sentence:- In each city, except Boston, and in each town, the veterans' agent shall be the burial agent; and in Boston, the soldiers' relief commission shall designate a burial agent who shall be a veteran.
SECTION 3. Section 9 of said chapter 115 is hereby amended by striking out the first sentence, as appearing in chapter 143 of the acts of 1957, and inserting in place thereof the following sentence:- Annually in April, the mayor of every city and the selectmen of every town shall appoint a resident of such city or town, who shall be a veteran as defined in clause Forty-third of section seven of chapter four, as a veterans' graves officer.
SECTION 4. The provisions of this act shall not apply to persons serving as veteran's agents and veterans' graves officers on or before the effective date of this act.
