Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same as follows:

Section 1 of chapter 73 of the acts of 1939, as appearing in section 1 of chapter 216 of said acts of 1939, is hereby amended by striking out the third sentence and inserting in place thereof the following sentence:- Appointments to such office shall be made only after a department civil service promotional examination; provided, however, that the permanent and call members of the department may take the examination notwithstanding any age limit prescribed in the laws or rules and regulations.
