Sen. Hedlund grew up in Hingham and graduated from Hingham Public Schools. As a teenager, he took over his grandfather’s truck repair business in Quincy and became active in the South Shore Chamber of Commerce. Frustrated with the direction of state government, he launched a two-year campaign that saw him defeat two older and better funded candidates in the 1990 primary on his way to unseating a 26-year incumbent. After losing his seat during the 1992 election, he won it back in 1994 and has held it since, thanks to an independent voting record, a belief in constituent service, and a platform of low taxes, smaller government and civil liberties.
